When Lorelie from Party Gateaux contacted me through Alibaba, she was looking for a transparent dessert cup solution for her bakery products.
Her requirement was quite clear: an 8oz PET dessert cup with an insert and lid.
At the beginning of the conversation, she mainly wanted to confirm whether we could provide the right size, the MOQ, the complete set price and whether we could arrange delivery to her forwarder’s warehouse in China.
For many small dessert brands, packaging is an important part of the product experience, but at the same time, packaging cost directly affects their selling price and profit margin. Therefore, finding a balance between appearance, functionality and cost is often the biggest challenge when selecting a packaging supplier.
Understanding the Customer’s Real Packaging Requirement
During the first communication, Lorelie asked about different sizes, including 6oz and 8oz options.
After confirming the application, I understood that the actual requirement was not simply a dessert cup, but a complete packaging set:
- transparent PET cup;
- matching insert;
- suitable lid;
- attractive presentation for desserts.
For dessert products, the packaging is not only used for protection. A clear container allows customers to see the product directly, which is especially important for cakes, cookies, mousse, pudding and other premium desserts.
After confirming the product structure, I prepared the quotation based on a trial order quantity of 10,000 sets.
When the First Quotation Did Not Match the Customer’s Budget
After receiving the quotation, Lorelie honestly told me that the price was higher than expected.
She replied:
“Ohhhh it’s pricey.”
Later, she also mentioned:
“Still pricey. No thanks.”
At this stage, I realized that the customer was not rejecting the product itself. The packaging structure matched her application, but the expected purchasing cost was different from the quotation.
This situation is very common for small food businesses.
When launching a new dessert product, many buyers need packaging that looks professional enough for customers but also keeps the initial investment under control.
Finding a Better Understanding of the Target Price
Instead of ending the conversation after the price concern, I asked Lorelie if she could share her target price.
Understanding a buyer’s target price is important because different customers may have different expectations based on their market, sales channel and previous supplier experience.
Lorelie shared her target price:
USD 0.067/set
Based on the confirmed structure, quantity and production cost, we reviewed the order again and offered our lowest possible price:
USD 0.071/set
The difference was only USD 0.004 per set, which means approximately USD 40 for the whole 10,000-set trial order.
Although the gap was not large, we understood that for a small dessert business testing the market, every cost element matters.
Helping Buyers Understand the Complete Packaging Cost
During international purchasing, price comparison is sometimes more complicated than simply comparing the unit price.
Different suppliers may provide different quotation methods.
For example, some suppliers quote only the factory price, while others include domestic transportation to the customer’s forwarder warehouse.
In this project, the customer had her own forwarder in China, so confirming the quotation basis was an important part of the communication.
For overseas buyers, understanding the difference between product cost, local transportation and final landed cost can help them make a more accurate purchasing decision.
Supporting the Customer With Product Evaluation
For dessert packaging, photos and quotations are often not enough.
The actual packaging experience also depends on:
- how the dessert fits inside the cup;
- whether the insert works properly;
- whether the lid closes securely;
- how the final product looks after packing.
