When I first received Angie’s inquiry, I could immediately tell she wasn’t a typical wholesale buyer.
She runs a small family bakery in Florida, selling homemade cookies through her own online store. Instead of asking for dozens of product options, she sent me a photo of the exact packaging she wanted—a clear PET dessert cup with a dome lid and a removable insert that could separate cookies from dipping sauce.
Her first planned order was only 10,000 sets, but she cared about every cent of the packaging cost. As a small business owner, she needed packaging that looked professional without making the product too expensive to sell.
Understanding the Real Need Behind the Inquiry
Many customers ask for a specific product because they have seen it somewhere else.
Instead of assuming the requested item is always the best choice, I usually try to understand how the customer will actually use the packaging.
After talking with Angie, I learned that she wasn’t looking for a custom-designed cup. She simply wanted a container that could:
- hold cookies securely;
- separate the dipping sauce from the cookies;
- look attractive for online orders;
- be affordable enough for a trial order.
Those details completely changed how I approached the quotation.
The Original Packaging Was Right…But Not for the Budget
The product Angie initially requested was our complete 16 oz PET dessert cup set, including the cup, dome lid and removable insert.
Technically, it was exactly what she needed.
However, after calculating the complete quotation, the total packaging cost for a 10,000-piece trial order exceeded her budget.
She told me honestly that the packaging looked perfect, but the cost was higher than what her business could support at this stage.
For many small food businesses, this situation is very common.
The product itself isn’t the problem—the packaging cost simply doesn’t match the size of the first order.
Looking for a Better Solution Instead of a Lower Price
Rather than simply lowering the price or ending the conversation, I started looking through our existing product range.
One product immediately came to mind.
It was our 117 series cookie cup, a mature design that we already manufacture for large retail programs, including supermarket projects.
Although it wasn’t the exact model Angie originally requested, it offered almost everything she actually needed:

- clear PET cup;
- dome lid;
- removable insert;
- excellent product visibility;
- easy filling and sealing;
- professional retail appearance.
More importantly, because this model is already in mass production, the manufacturing cost is much lower than less common structures.
For a customer placing a relatively small trial order, choosing an existing production model often makes far more sense than insisting on a higher-cost option.
Helping the Customer Compare Total Cost Instead of Unit Price
Packaging decisions are rarely based on product price alone.
For export orders, buyers also need to understand shipping costs, packing efficiency and overall landed cost.
To make the comparison easier, I prepared two complete solutions for Angie.
The first followed her original request.
The second used the 117 series packaging together with a complete shipping plan.
This allowed her to compare not only the unit price of the cup, but the total cost of bringing the packaging to her business.
Instead of asking, “Which cup is cheaper?”, the discussion became, “Which solution gives the best value?”
That is usually a much more meaningful conversation.

Sometimes the Best Recommendation Isn’t the One the Customer Asked For
This project reminded me that good packaging advice isn’t about selling the highest-priced product.
It’s about understanding how the customer plans to use the packaging and recommending the solution that fits both the application and the budget.
For growing bakeries and small food businesses, existing production models often provide significant advantages:
- lower manufacturing cost;
- proven production stability;
- faster delivery;
- no custom tooling investment;
- packaging that still delivers a professional retail appearance.
In many cases, those advantages are more valuable than choosing a completely different product simply because it was the customer’s original idea.
The Project Is Still Moving Forward
Angie is currently reviewing the recommended 117 series packaging together with the shipping proposal.
We have prepared product specifications, photos and logistics options so she can compare both solutions before making her final decision.
Whether she chooses the original cup or the alternative design, our goal remains the same:
to help her find packaging that supports her business—not just today’s trial order, but future growth as well.
What We Learned
This conversation reinforced something we see quite often.
Many small food brands don’t actually need a custom packaging solution for their first order.
What they need is an experienced manufacturer who understands both packaging performance and commercial reality.
Sometimes, recommending an existing product instead of the one originally requested is the fastest way to reduce costs, shorten lead time and help a growing business move forward with confidence.
