Ans: Following categories are dealt in STL:

  • Having problems related to speech
  • Having problems related to learning.

Q-3: Does all the categories work together?
Ans: Due to peculiar symptoms, habits and specific method of teachings all the
categories cannot be dealt together. Similarly in a category, groups are organized as
per their mental levels.

Q-4: What programs are run for autistic children?
Ans: Following programs/ therapies are planned for autistic children as per the
requirement of the child:
  • Behavior Therapy
  • Speech Therapy
  • Occupational Therapy
  • Physical Therapy
  • Sensory Therapy
  • Individualized Educational Plan
Q-5: What are the timings for different therapies?
Ans: The duration of different therapies varies from case to case, generally the timings are as under:
  • Behavior Therapy – 45mins to 1.5 hours
  • Speech Therapy – 30 mins
  • Occupational Therapy – 20 to 30 mins
  • Physical Therapy – 30mins to1hour
  • Sensory Therapy – 20 to 30 mins
  • Individualized Educational Plan – 2 to 3 hours
Q-6: What is the teacher – student ratio?
Ans: Almost half of the time is spent in 1: setting, rest in a small group of 1:3 or 1:5.

Q-7: Is the staff qualified?
Ans: Yes the staff is qualified and experienced.

Q-8: How many children have been shifted to normal school?
Ans: Since 2001, 23 children of different categories including H.I, Autistics, Downs and
Slow learners have been shifted to the normal school.

Q-9: What method is used for hearing impaired children?
Ans: Total communication involving lip reading, auditory help and facial/ gesture
expressions is used for communication and academics. In this way, child behaves
in a normal way in the society. Use of sign language is discouraged.

Q-10: Is transport facility available?
Ans: Yes it is available for both Islamabad and Rawalpindi.

Q-11: What is the age limit for admission?
Ans: Age limit for the admission is from 3-16 years.

Q-12: Is there any vocational training for these children in STL?
Ans: Vocational training is in the future goals of STL, but yet not started due to
financial constraints.

Q-13: What are the school working hours?
Ans: School timings are from 0800-1300 hrs less Sat & Sun.

Q-14: If someone cannot pay full fee?
Ans: Non affording children are provided all the facilities free of fee or on subsidized
fee. Once such child comes for admission board/ panel of STL decides on this

Ans: Chronological and mental age of the child are considered while deciding about the

Q-16: Are parents informed about the work being done with their children?
Ans: Parents are always encouraged to participate in the programs being run with their
child. A regular feed back on daily basis is provided to the parents and Parent
Teacher meetings on quarterly basis are also held to discuss the progress of the
child. Other than these steps parents or staff do share their problems when required.

Q-17: What is the process of shifting of a child to a normal school?
Ans: Depending upon the severity of problem and age, when a child comes to a stage
where he can join any normal school then the parents are suggested for admission
in any normal school. In the morning child goes to normal school and he is
prepared for his syllabus in the evening session in Step To Learn. This process
prolongs for 8-12 months, by then any normal teacher can also help the child in his

Q-18: Are there any outdoor activities for these kids?
Ans: Children are taken on visits to parks and other public entertainment places at least
once in a quarter depending upon weather conditions. In routine children get
opportunity for playing different games in the play ground.

Q-19: Are the children assessed in STL?
Ans: Children are assessed in STL for their functional level and calculation of mental
age in comparison to their chronological age.

Q-20: What help is provided to the children who can not attend the school regularly?
Ans: Number of children can not attend STL regularly due to far distance or some
personal reasons. STL provides a home based program (to be run by parents or any
selected teacher) for such children and monitor it on monthly/ two monthly basis.
